The Gym

Around the age of 12 music was introduced. Plato put it as such:

“That having reference to the body is gymnastics, but cultivation of the mind, music.”

Exercising was often accompanied by the lyre as it was believed to help teach coordination as well as graceful, fluid movement. From a behavioral standpoint music was thought to help keep order in the classroom. What better way to calm a hyperactive kid?

“…so also the lyre teacher sees to his pupils’ restraint and good behavior….to make them less wild.”

Similar to a harp, listening to authentic melodies one can honestly hear everything from hypnotic peacefulness these environments aimed for to majestic Olympic victory marches. Music was not merely a distraction, or something in the background, but very much in the forefront and part of the experience. Learning to play an instrument like the flute was also thought to help one reach a certain level of refinement. Aristocratic, a true blue blood. Indeed, music is vital, stimulating and shown to be a powerful influence in the mind, body connection.
